Anchor Construction was recently featured in the publication MEAT+POULTRY, showcasing an 11,000 SF meat processing facility design-build project completed in partnership with The Stutzman Group. Located in Sturgis, Michigan, the facility is focused on producing high-end Japanese wagyu beef for consumers and businesses around the country.
Anchor utilized our design-build expertise to help overcome obstacles and deliver a state-of-the-art facility. This build was unique to Anchor due to the facility handling live animals and needing to comply with not only local and state permitting but the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations as well.
Anchor has completed numerous manufacturing and warehouse builds, where our priority is to maximize the available space and minimize the distance of travel. Building a facility for penning live animals, a rail system carrying meat to various stations for chilling and storage, and custom processing posed to be quite different.
The facility features freezer and cooler boxes throughout, along with a custom processing room, offices, bathrooms, locker room, washroom, storage areas, and more. The rail system runs throughout the cooler boxes and process room to transport the beef halves through the facility.
During the design process of the pen area, specific attention was given to individual animal welfare as well as employee safety. Wash-down-rated walls, electrical, and metals are also positioned in areas of heavy water usage. A specialized boiler system runs hot water throughout the facility for cleaning purposes.
